Description

Upstairs
The house is ‘upside-down’ with its large open-plan living area upstairs, looking over the front garden and fields to the rear.

In the living area, there are two large comfy sofas, an oak dining table and chairs. An insert fire in the living room keeps the chill away on cooler spring/autumn evenings.

The kitchen is well-equipped and includes dishwasher, washing machine, large fridge/freezer, second fridge, microwave, oven and hob.

French doors lead out onto the private terrace with table and chairs and a barbecue. This is the perfect spot for a glass of wine in the shade of mulberry, walnut and fig trees, whilst watching the sunset.

Downstairs
From the living area, the main staircase leads down to the bedrooms – one double bedroom and one twin bedroom. These bedrooms stay delightfully cool during our hot summers.

There is a bathroom with toilet and a shower room with toilet

A small staircase leads to the third (twin) bedroom – ideal for children who feel they have their own ‘den’ and yet within earshot of parents!

Extra Information
All bedrooms have insect screens in the windows, and electric fans. A hairdryer is provided.

For babies, we have a full-size cot and high chair, bath, bouncer chair and a stroller. Please tell us if you would like any other equipment.

For entertainment, we have children's swings, table tennis, swing-ball, mini-pool table, table football, boules, darts, badminton and pool games and inflatables. The gite has a selection of books and family games. We have a selection of DVDs which you are welcome to borrow.

Bikes are available for guests' use.

Wifi is available in the gite.

Although as owners we live on site, we try to remain as much in the background as possible. However, we are always here for any information required, suggestions of places to visit or to book a restaurant for you. In the unfortunate event of you needing to visit a doctor or dentist, we are happy to accompany you and help with any translations required.

We have two golden retrievers, who are extremely gentle and adore children and barbeques!

Area description

The gite Couchant is in peaceful countryside, surrounded by fields and woodland, with views across a valley.

Lot et Garonne is in the Aquitaine region of SW France. Just one hour south of the better known Dordogne region, this is a beautiful area of gently rolling hills, farmed with fruit trees, arable crops and glorious sunflowers. Enjoy picturesque medieval villages perched on hilltops, bustling colourful markets bursting with the freshest local produce, wonderful food and wine, and a slower pace of life reminiscent of a France of yesteryear.

The gite Couchant is situated at the end of a lane, with no passing traffic. Within five minutes drive is the local village of St Maurin with its shop, bar and restaurant. During the summer there is an excellent weekly Night Market, where you can sit in the pretty village square, enjoy a variety of cooked local produce and dance under the stars!

We have lived here for thirteen years and have seen many guests return time and again. We like to think our guests arrive as strangers, but leave as friends.

The Lot et Garonne has wonderful scenery and still retains a laid-back way of life from a bygone era. Life is taken at a gentle pace by the locals, and yet for visitors there is so much to do.

Day trips out can include the wonderful scenery of the Lot and Dordogne valleys, Cahors and St Cirq Lapopie, and the larger cities of Toulouse and Bordeaux.

Travel through time from the incredible prehistoric cave paintings at Pech Merle, a Gallo-Roman villa at Villascopia, the medieval castle at Bonaguil and the many local medieval villages, to the modern era in Toulouse with its Space Museum and Airbus factory tours.

A walking holiday in this area is a real delight. There are plenty of well-mapped routes varying from gentle to rather more strenuous (!), taking in the breathtaking scenery of this lovely area.

It is wonderful too for nature-lovers, and we often see deer, badgers, red squirrels and the occasional wild boar, numerous birds of prey, golden orioles, and hoopoes. In March and October we occasionally see cranes flying overhead on their migration path. In April, in our garden and woodlands there is an abundant display of red wild tulips, and in May a walk down through our field is a delight with numerous orchids. Twenty six varieties were found in the local area by a Botanical Society who stayed here; quite a few of them here at Couchant!

In early summer many of the local villages hold plant fairs. Our favourite is Tournon d'Agenais, held annually on the 1st May, and the village square is a riot of colour from all the plants and shrubs on sale. It is the signal to get cracking on all the pots and hanging baskets which surround our pool during the summer!

The local village of St Maurin has a fascinating history which is highlighted in its charming museum. It has become well known in the area for its excellent summer Wednesday Night Market. Local food producers offer a range of cooked meals, wine, fruit and veg, and other local produce, and up to 500 people eat their meal seated in the picturesque village square, along with music and dancing.

Another 'must-do' event during the end of July/early August is the Son et Lumiere event at Valence d'agen. The scenery created for the show is an entire village with school, shops, church and houses, set alongside the canal. There are wonderful depictions of a Pentecost Fair, a wedding and a WWII fight between the Resistance and the SS. with carts and cars from bygone eras, a 1920's fire engine, and numerous livestock! 350 local people take part and create a magical evening, accompanied by fireworks and laser shows. Guests of all ages and nationalities love this show!

We are close to the wine growing areas of Buzet, Duras and Cahors, and for food lovers this area is a must! Magret and confit of duck, foie gras, melons, plums and soft fruit are all produced locally. Agen is famous for its prunes, and once you have tried them steeped in Armagnac, it will forever banish the memories of school-dinner prunes!!! We so appreciate being able to eat such high quality seasonal fruit and vegetables, and the fact that our meals come from within the close locality.

Restaurants vary from basic regional cooking to haute cuisine, and prices from 10 euros for a three-course lunch to rather more to dine at 'Trama' (formerly known as"l'Aubergade") restaurant in nearby Puymirol. With its three Michelin stars, this is truly one of the most well-renowned restaurants in France. There are however so many quality (and cheaper) restaurants in the area. For the smaller budget, Rick Stein himself recommended the Station Restaurant at Agen Station and it represents excellent value for money in a more unusual setting!

At the end of a busy day, though, come back to the peace and quiet and open a bottle of wine on your terrace, watch the sun go down and enjoy the silence!
