A favourite beach - La Tranche-sur-Mer

Street to the Beach

La-Tranche-sur-Mer is a delightful town on the Atlantic coast that we love to visit a lot.

At 80 miles from our home in Deux Sevres, it is not exactly on the doorstep for us but, when the sun is shining and the top is down on the Saab convertible, there is nothing nicer than a trip along winding roads with the wind blowing in our hair and our beach towels and Factor 50 packed in our beach bag.

La-Tranche-sur-Mer is a fairly-nearby alternative to La Rochelle (again, a beautiful beach resort) but it is easier to find parking here during the peak summer months. It has an easily accessible and attractive beach with restaurants and shops nearby. You can pick up all forms of beachware here and be on the sandy beach within a minute or two. The sea is perfect for swimming.

In the south of the Vendée, La-Tranche-sur-Mer faces south towards the also popular Ile de Re and has one of the best climates in the Vendée. Its 8 kilometres of sandy beaches and white painted houses give the town a Mediterranean atmosphere.

The resort is quiet during the winter but comes alive in July and August. The beaches are popular amongst water sports enthusiasts, particularly windsurfers and surfers.

In peak season, boat excursions are available to and around the Ile-de-Re, Fort Boyard, L'ile d'Aix and La Rochelle from Mondays to Fridays. There are markets on Tuesdays, Wednesdays (in July and August), Saturdays and Sundays.
