La Maison du Tilleul, or Lime Tree House, is a stunning 18 century self-catering farmhouse in the Vendee on the border of the Loire Valley, in central France. Fully renovated it is situated in one acre of secure gardens with historic outbuildings, patio area, private pool and BBQ.

Located at the heart of Irais, a peaceful village with boulangerie, it is a short drive from bustling Airvault and within easy reach of Poitiers, Saumur, Montreuil Bellay and Richelieu.

The house sleeps up to eleven people and is ideal for large or multiple families or re-unions.

La Maison du Tilleul
The Swimming Pool
The 10m by 4m oval shaped pool is open from Easter to mid September. The fenced-in patio area features a large BBQ and space for 10-12 sun loungers. The pool conforms to strict French laws. Both gates at either end are lockable.

Living Room
Relax in comfort in the spacious living room, which features original oak beams, limestone flagstones, and patio doors that open into the garden. Curl up on one of the three large comfy sofas and watch a DVD or UK TV on the 42" LCD TV, or read a book from the growing library.

There are two wicker chairs suitable for small children

The Kitchen
The large flagstoned kitchen features electric oven and hob, dishwasher, large fridge freezer and can cater for large parties easily. The French wooden bench tables can comfortably seat 10 adults and a highchair.

Exposed beams dominate the upstairs, which features a large mezzanine landing area. At one end is the Master bedroom and en-suite. Through the Master Bedroom is a new bedroom suite consisting of two double rooms and a bathroom.

At the opposite end of the house are the single, twin and large double rooms. The main bathroom and WC is also at this end of the property.

Bed linen is provided, with duvets, throughout.

Master Bedroom with En-suite Bathroom
The large master bedroom has a super king size bed and walk in wardrobe. The ensuite bathroom features roll top bath, shower, original marble topped dresser and mirrored basin, WC and bidet.

New Double Suite (from Master Bedroom)
An additional double room featuring two double beds. The wooden cot and mattress is stored in this room.

Single bedroom
This has a metal framed single bed with removable net and a detachable safety rail. The safety rail is ideal for young children who would rather be in a proper bed than a cot. The cot can be placed in the single bedroom.

Twin bedroom
The only twin room in the house has a large fitted wardrobe for storage, and bedside tables.

Double bedroom (Next to Twin Bedroom)
This is one of three double rooms, all featuring regular size double beds. This room features a chest of drawers, hanging rails and bedside tables for storage.

The New Suite
We have extended the upstairs of Maison du Tilleul to form a new ‘East Wing’ featuring two double bedrooms and a new bathroom, with bath.

It can be accessed via the main house through the master bedroom (ideal for parents who want to keep an eye on younger children); or if preferred there is private access via a new spiral staircase, which leads to the garden and pool.

Perfect for families or groups of friends who want additional privacy.

The Spacious Garden
Maison du Tilleul is set in large private grounds with plenty of room for kids (or grown ups) to play boule or have a kick about, while others relax by the pool or slumber in a deck chair under a pear or walnut tree.

There is plenty of private secure parking for two or even three cars.

The Winery
In the grounds of the house are old barns and a former ‘winery’; while now derelict this beautiful piece of French architecture has a charm of its own.

For the extra guest or two - The Gite
In 2012, we converted the Gîte, adjacent to the main house. It is now a beautiful self-contained one or two person, studio-style apartment, which is ideal for a nanny, granny or people with mobility issues.

The wheelchair accessible unit features a living/sleeping room with double bed, kitchenette and ground floor wet room. It is more than comfortable for one person or a couple.

There’s a TV, storage space, patio and direct access to the pool and gardens.

The Gîte offers additional, private, sleeping capacity and can be added to your existing holiday for £250. Please note the Gîte cannot be booked in isolation from the main house.

Area description

Places to visit
Whether your interest is history or adventure, gastronomy or shopping, walking, cycling or canoeing, there is so much to do in this area, all practically on the doorstep.

Airvault is the birthplace of Voltaire and an historic market town. It boasts a Romanesque bridge and the Saint Pierre church, built circa 975 AD, that was used as a stop for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

Near the church is the abbey surrounded by narrow medieval streets. The Castle of Airvault overlooks the church.

Airvault features a large supermarket, boulangerie, boucheries and banks and every Saturday there is a colourful market selling amazing fresh local fruit and veg, fresh fish and local goods.

Saint Loup Lamaire
About ten minutes from Irais is Saint Loup Lamaire.
Built around the river, the village has some lovely walks.
The Château is a jewel in France's architectural heritage and reportedly an important site in the history of the region of Poitou.

St Generoux
Two miles from Irais is St Generoux, which has a Romanesque bridge and church dating from the 12th and 13th centuries.
It's also the home of two great local restaurants – the Auberge du Vieux Pont and the Au Bon Accueil.

Irais Church
The medieval church is at the heart of the village.

Richlieu Park
Thirty minutes drive from Irais is the beautiful town of Richelieu, with its medieval streets and open square that plays host to festivals, bars, and restaurants. Adjacent to the town is Richelieu Park, once the home of the infamous Cardinal’s Chateau, which no longer exists. The park often has events such as scurry driving races and there's also punting on the park’s canal and lake, a children’s zoo and play park, plus long walks around beautiful grounds

The local summer festivals are too numerous to list.

Further Afield
Other places to visit include - Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, Futurescope, Zoo Doue, La Vallee des Singes, Pic Vert Adventure

The busy provincial towns of Thoars, Loudun and Parthenay are 15 to 30 minutes drive.

The heart of the Loire Valley is 45 minutes drive north and the sea side is two hours to the west.
