Ceret and the Vallespir

Languedoc-Roussillon / Pyrénées-Orientales / Ceret

Rich in culture and tradition, vibrant and exciting, the Vallespir is an area of the Pyrenees Orientales just waiting to be discovered.

This ancient land of Catalonia is a colourful mix of music, dance, art, food, rugby and warm generous people. There is a plentiful selection of villas and apartments in the Vallespir to suit every traveller and budget.

Stretching east to west from the pretty town of Ceret to the walled town of Prats de Mollo, the valley is dominated by the snow-covered mountain of Canigou that gives way to dramatic hills of chestnut and oak, beautiful clear rivers, orchards of fruit and mimosa and vineyards.

The terracotta roofs of the towns and villages hug the frontier with Spain. The area has an amazing natural beauty and a Mediterranean climate and is blessed with long sunny days and mild winters.

Places to visit include Ceret, a lively market town made famous by Picasso, Cezanne and Fauvism and home to the museum of modern art. Here you will discover a pretty mix of painted houses, interesting squares and huge plane trees shading the streets and cafes.

Ceret hosts the Cherry Festival, the Bull Run, the Sardane competition and many concerts and festivals all year round.

Amelie les Bain is a pretty spa town with roman baths, a stunning church and a daily market and Palada is a gorgeous hilltop village with a farmers’ market and wonderful views. From here, discover the medieval heritage of Arles sur Tech and the beautiful cloisters of its abbey.

Go to St Laurent de Cerdans and visit the espadrille factory, makers of the toile du soleil, the colourful local fabric. Alternatively, golfers will probably prefer to head for the Domain des Falgos, the most beautiful championship course in Europe.

Serralongue, with its stunning views, ancient church, pastures and horses is a pretty village nestled in the mountains and is well worth a visit.

At the end of the valley is Prats de Mollo, on the frontier with Spain, a lovely walled town with a hillside fort and lots of restaurants and cafes. Here, surrounded by a stunning backdrop of mountains and ramparts, you will find the locals enjoying a leisurely game of boules in the squares. The Catalan culture is strongest here with its 18th century soldiers re-enactment, the bear fete, the bandas music in the streets, and the fete du slip, fireman’s fete, carnivals and regular concerts.

Tuck in to a giant paella, dance the Sardane, experience a festival, go to the market or try the local wines and charcuterie. You can also nip into Spain for the day, bunji, go canyoning, swim in the rivers, collect mushrooms, fish, play golf, hike, mountain bike or just relax in a cafe and watch the world go by.

Stay with us at Mas Soula and experience real France and a very warm welcome to the Vallespir where there really is something for everyone.
