Chateau St Michel is the perfect place for a holiday, wedding or special occasion. The Chateau is a hidden gem, full of surprises to make your stay even more pleasurable with a collection of magnificent oil paintings, spectacular chandeliers, and fine antique Georgian and French furniture.

Situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Pamplie, nestling in the rolling green countryside of the Poitou Charentes region of Western France, the Chateau is the ideal location for bird watching, fishing, photo shoots and filming.

Chateau St Michel
The Chateau has been beautifully decorated with an elegant, luxurious and comfortable interior. Notable features include marble floors, an ionic columned portico, beautiful mantelpieces, Aubusson rugs, striking mirrors and magnificent mahogany doors brought from Prince Jeffri of Brunei's former Palace next to the Dorchester hotel on Park Lane, London.

There is a Bose surround system in the principle rooms into which you can plug your mp3 player plus there is a TV for DVDs and a music system in the Red Room on the first floor.

Ground Floor
You enter the house through an Ionic portico leading directly into the heart of the Chateau, the Marble Hall. This room is perfect for lavish entertaining, parties and special events. The walls are adorned with large oil paintings, enjoy the large open fire and admire the handmade mirrors. Through the stunning gilded mahogany double doors into the Blue Drawing Room.

The Blue Drawing Room is a little more intimate in scale, making it ideal for a cosy night by the fire in winter, but versitile so the room can easily be used to entertain a party. On a warm summer's evening, you can relax on the massive handmade sofas with a glass of wine. The room is bathed in light from the east in the morning, and in the evening the massive and exquisite lead crystal chandelier is no poor substitute.

The other main room on the ground floor is the large family kitchen, with bespoke kitchen units, Lacanche range cooker, traditional Belfast sink, Cararra marble floor, large painted table, Louis XV arm chairs, and large patio doors to the east and south sides.

Sleeping at the Chateau
There is a double height staircase from the Marble Hall, which leads to a bright galleried landing with oak floor and double doors to a comfortable single bedroom. All bedrooms are on the first floor and are south east facing with lovely views over the grounds.

The Print Room is one of the nicest rooms in the house, a little more cosy in scale than the grand rooms downstairs. It can be a twin or double bedroom. The architectural prints are copied from 18th century editions of Vitruvius Britainicus, the geometric print curtains are cut silk velvet. The furniture is eighteen century English and an open fire provides a wonderful focal point.

The galleried landing leads eastward to the Red Room and Hall. The Red Room has a small sitting room furnished with antique French and Georgian, it is screened from the hall by columns. It has a flat screen satellite TV, DVD player, Wi-Fi access and a Sony stereo system with Bose surround sound speakers. The curtains are silk velvet damask print and perfectly complement the rich Farrow and Ball red of the walls. There is a large Georgian style mirror made by the owner and exquisite appliqué wall lights on either side.

A further three bedroom and bathroom facilities are accessed from the red landing. They are similarly furnished in an elegant and lavish way. The bedrooms can be used as doubles or twins.

The chateau sits in 2 acres of beautiful natural landscape full of wild flowers in the summer, fruit trees, hazelnut and cherry trees. The river Miochette runs through the grounds and offers fishing from the autumn through to the late spring.

Area description

The Chateau is located on the edge of the idyllic village of Pamplie which is situated amidst the rolling fields of Charentes region of South West France. Pamplie has medieval origins and is famous for its rich butter which is served at the best restaurants across the globe. The surrounding countryside is unspoilt, and the vast array of wildlife is testimony to this.

Matthew Brierley, ornithologist at the RSPB says 'The birdlife at St.Michel's is stunning. Expect kingfishers, nightingales in the garden, Little Bittern in the reeds next door, Hoopoes an easy walk, Cirl Buntings all-round the village of Pamplie. Incredible! The Chateau is a bird watchers paradise, especially in the spring time when the grounds team with rarebirds, many of which are extinct in the UK.’

Pamplie is sleepy rural village located in the heart of the Poitou Charentes region. The Chateau is situated on the edge of the village and borders open, rolling countryside. Pamplie was originally a medieval settlement, and the parish church, in the centre of the village, is testimony to this. There are endless country walks to enjoy and the wildlife is second to none, from deer in the surrounding fields, to birds of prey nesting in the garden. There is a lake within a ten minutes’ drive at Secondigny, where water sports, horse riding and numerous other activities are offered. There are also lakeside pool and cafe bars which are open during the summer months.

Green Venice or Marais Poitevin
Green Venice or Marais Poitevin is a charming and unique attraction a short journey from Pamplie. Enjoy a gondola ride or a leisurely stroll along the verdant waterways and finish the day off with a delicious meal in the town.

Futuroscope in Poitiers, is one of the country’s most popular theme parks. There are a series of giant Imax cinemas that broadcast awe-inspiring films which include an interactive safari to see the animals of the future and the legendary Apollo 11 moon landing. There are many other attractions, such as rides including giant robot arms that dance with their occupants, and a light show blasted onto water.

Puy du Fou
If you want a noisy, smoky, live spectacular, that will bring your children’s history lessons to life, then step back in time at Puy du Fou in the Vendée where, in one afternoon, you can experience a Roman circus, Viking longboats and an 18th century village. Puy du Fou is essentially a series of live historical shows dedicated to 2,000 years of French history. You can watch gladiators battle, Vikings loot and, in a new show for 2010, armies lay siege. There are performances of falconry, jousting, magic and music, and the park explodes into life during the evenings when a thousand local volunteers perform a historical sound and music extravaganza on what they claim is the world’s largest stage.

La Rochelle
La Rochelle is located just over an hour from the Chateau. It is well worth a visit. It is packed with terrace cafes and restaurants, bars, delightful shops

Ile de Ré
If you want to rediscover life's simple pleasures, head for the Ile de Ré. France's favourite holiday island, a 30km-long flat strip of land with photogenic villages, old ports and sandy beaches, is small enough to cycle round, or to explore on horseback. UNESCO World Heritage site Saint-Martin-de-Ré has elegantly weathered buildings arranged around a star-shaped port. Long the holiday haven of affluent Parisiens, this dreamy, golden hued island can be found a half-hour drive from La Rochelle and is perfect for a family holiday. You won't find amusement arcades, hamburger joints or surf shops here; the government of the island has worked hard to maintain its bijou character
