Plan a Fairytale Wedding in a French Chateau

A dream wedding can create memories which will last a lifetime.  It is the one day in your life that you plan down to the smallest detail.  You select who you want to spend the day with, what you wish to wear, dictate how everyone and everything should be, and in your mind you visualise the day as perfect.

According to a recent article in the Daily Telegraph, the average wedding now costs more than £18,000.  With that figure in mind, there is little wonder that prospective couples are researching alternatives to the traditional English church ceremony, in order to get the best value for their day.

One option that is rapidly increasing in popularity is to hold your wedding in a French chateau.  France has an abundance of fairy tale castles which offer the perfect setting for a romantic day. Many chateaux now offer a wedding package as part of their services, and with some chateau able to cater for as many as 300 guests, there is no need to keep your guest list to a minimum.

Chateau may be hired for a couple of days, or alternatively, many couples choose to rent the whole chateau for a full week, enabling both themselves and their guests to enjoy a week long celebration and honeymoon combined.

Not only does a chateau wedding provide countless fabulous backdrops for the obligatory photographs, they are often built in a manner which offers large rooms for entertaining, and small cosy areas for intimate moments.

Many of the larger chateaux have their own team of staff who can ensure that the day runs smoothly, these include chefs, maids, groundskeepers and butlers who all work together to provide the wedding of your dreams. With dedicated wedding planners also available at most of these venues, it is possible to ensure that everything is in place before you arrive at the chateau.

In order to get married in France, one or both of the couple must have been resident in the area local to the chateau for at least 40 days immediately prior to the ceremony. In France marriage is a civil ceremony which must be performed before any religious ceremony can take place.

Many couples therefore take the option of having a very small civil ceremony in the UK, before travelling to France for a lavish blessing in the chateau. This removes the necessity to reside in the area for 40 days prior to the religious ceremony, as legally a UK marriage is recognised by French law (and vice versa). If you opt to use your chosen chateau’s wedding planner service, they will help to arrange all of this for you.

There are many reasons to hold your wedding in a chateau.  One of the attractions is certainly the luxurious surroundings in which you will find yourself. Most chateaux have stood for several centuries and feature a variety of fabulous architectures which will delight both you and your guests.  Often they are decorated to the highest standards of luxury, featuring magnificent entrance halls, fantastic double staircases and stunning chandeliers.

Ornate furniture decorates the rooms, and bedrooms, which tend to be en-suite, are large and numerous. Some chateaux have bedrooms in the towers which offer fabulous views across acres of wooded parkland, while others include wine cellars, spacious terraces and even billiard rooms.

Outside you may find rivers and streams running through the grounds, views of mountains and vineyards, and a great many chateaux now have their own swimming pool and even a tennis court.

The French have a great love affair with food, kitchens are usually well equipped with ample space for food preparation, and local markets offer an assortment of fresh produce to make your day extra special. It is almost impossible to stay in a chateaux which is not located near to a vineyard, in fact, several even produce fine wine themselves.

With superb cuisine, a beautiful backdrop, and a fabulous country in which to spend your honeymoon, there is little wonder that France is rapidly becoming the wedding destination of choice for many British couples.  With a little careful planning, a romantic chateau wedding may be the perfect way to spend this most special of days.
