If your dream holiday house in France is one within easy walking distance of the boulangerie, yet still a haven of peace, Manoir Brunet is the place for you.

The house is spacious with numerous nooks and crannies and has been recently luxuriously refurbished to a high standard. It sleeps 10 in various permutations in five bedrooms all completely differently decorated. Three are en suite and there are two additional bathrooms and two separate toilets.

The Manoir offers glorious tranquility for adults, and the walled garden (3,500 sq m) is a safe adventure playground for the younger guests. Being close to local restaurants and entertainment means you do not have to run a taxi service, or take turns to drive at night, making the Manoir a truly ideal retreat for all ages.

This imposing 18th century mansion is situated just off the centre of the little town of Riberac, in the Dordogne, and your baguette is literally two minutes away. You are home before the coffee has even percolated!

The lively main square of Riberac, and its popular Friday market, are less than five minutes walk away. There are four restaurants within walking distance and several bars, plus a high street with all the little shops which have disappeared from UK towns and villages. If you prefer the convenience of buying all your groceries at once, there are two large supermarkets a short drive away.

Manoir Brunet
Manoir Brunet is located in the centre of Riberac, its facade greets you at the top of a short incline from the main square. You enter via a short flight of steps through double front doors into a large chandelier-lit, tiled hall with the main reception rooms to the right and left.

There is a television room (4.1m x 5.3m) with a 127cm screen and free sat. In addition to the grand salon (5.6m x 7.4m) which has ample seating for 12, the study provides a quiet environment behind closed doors for those who want to/have to work. There is wi-fi throughout and an i-pod station in the salon.

The kitchen (4.1m x 5.5m) is well equipped, with double sink, American fridge, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The kitchen table seats 12 for informal meals when you don’t want to use the very elegant, traditionally-furnished dining room (5.5m x 5.6m) next door.

The utility room (2.m x 3.1m) has a washing machine, tumble drier, iron and ironing board.

Le Baroque - a large room with a super king size bed and en-suite bathroom.
L'Air Marin - This room has a king size bed with en-suite bathroom.
Le Rococo - 2 single beds overlooking the courtyard, with en-suite shower room.
Le Tournesol - This bedroom is flexible with the choice of 2 single beds or 1 super king size bed. The room is overlooking the courtyard and has a shared bathroom.
La Mignonette - Another flexible bedroom again with the choice of 2 single beds or 1 super king size bed. The room is overlooking the courtyard and has a shared bathroom.

At the end of the courtyard is a very large barn converted into a games room (14.7m x 7.6m) with table tennis, darts and table football.

Outside this, there is a long terrace from which the garden rises through a grassy parterre and rose beds to a wooded area with winding paths, which give superb views over Riberac and the surrounding countryside. This terrace has an electric awning and is furnished with tiled etageres and a 12 seater dining table.

To the left, the heated pool (10m x 5m x 1.40m) has an alarm and a rolling cover simply-operated by a nearby electric switch if child safety is a concern. Around the pool are comfortable sun loungers and at the end of the tiled surround there is a gazebo.

The electric gates to the left of the house take you into a 35 metre long courtyard with parking for five cars which may also be accessed from the house by various French windows.

Area description

Riberac (population 4,500) is a small unspoilt town in the Perigord which is synonymous with wine, foie gras and truffles. It is surrounded by woodland, gentle hills and farmland, and the landscape is dotted with ancient villages and lovely churches. The area is small scale, very rural and there is no traffic to speak of. The stars in the night sky never cease to amaze. The River Dronne flows through the town, and there are fountains in the main square. There are a wide variety of shops ranging from a tantalisingly comprehensive haberdasher to a hunting/shooting/fishing paradise for any hunter-gatherer you have with you.

Riberac played a prominent part in the French Revolution in this part of France, and the house is named after an erstwhile mayor who once lived there. You can still see the socket for his flagpole above the front door if you look out of the landing window!

Riberac is famous for its extensive Friday market, and there is also a farmers market on Tuesdays. In October walnuts are for sale, and in winter months there are special markets for the sale of foie gras and truffles.

The sports enthusiast will find plenty to keep them entertained. In Riberac itself you can book tennis courts by the hour or by the week, and there are bicycles for hire. There is also canoeing and riding. There are several 9 hole golf courses within 20 minutes and 18 holes at Perigueux. In the unlikely event that you tire of the private pool, Riberac has a large open air one complete with diving boards and a special area for children. There is also the riverside ‘beach’ at the beautiful village of Aubeterre.

For the culturally inclined there is a little cinema, and in summer, a short walk from the house, wonderful concerts in the deconsecrated 12th century Romanesque church, Collegiale-Notre-Dame de Riberac. In July Riberac hosts a 4-day pop concert of more than local repute, and throughout the summer there are festivals, antique markets and food fairs (some with major firework displays) all around the region.

If you wish to venture further afield, Perigueux, the principal town in the area, is 50 minutes away and Brantome, the Venice of the Perigord, is about the same. Both towns are worth a visit for their history, and beautiful ancient buildings. If pre-history is your passion, then the ancient cave paintings and carvings at Les- Eyzies-de-Tayac are not much further on. Lascaux itself, the most famous of them all, is only 2 hours away and easy on French roads.

Eating and Drinking
The whole area is famed for food and drink and tastings and tours abound. There are five restaurants within walking distance and others in Verteillac, Bertric Buree, Lusignac and the middle of nowhere just ten minutes away by car. Pineau de Charentes a fortified white wine is the local aperitif of choice – also delicious over melon!
