Description

Villa Sauve is stunning and tranquil property with magnificent views of the Cevennes Mountains. It is situated in a tiny hamlet near the beautiful medieval village of Sauve. The Villa was built in the 16th Century and is filled with an abundance of charm and character.

Villa Sauve is like a self-contained village and consists of 2 tastefully restored ancient stone houses which easily sleep 13 guests. There are 6 comfortable bedrooms furnished to a high standard, 8 bathrooms and a separate W.C.

Outside guests can take advantage of the large private pool (12 meters by 6 meters) with stunning views over the vines. There is a rustic cabin in the woods, 2 outdoor kitchens, 2 indoor kitchens, 2 Weber barbecues, Paella pans and large standing burners. Visitors will delight in the organic vegetable patch, flower cutting gardens, herb gardens, flowering pots and magnificent old trees.

There is a breath-taking view facing the Cevennes Mountain range, sunflower fields and vineyards. Guests can relax in the spacious and beautifully furnished indoor living areas, including a variety of terraces and lawns.

Everything in the house and gardens has been carefully chosen by the owners for their own family use. It is far from a typical summer rental property and exudes the air of a personal home, filled with warmth and comfort, as well as retaining features of the rustic French countryside.

The property is a sanctuary and paradise for those in search of a slower pace of life. Villa Sauve is a spacious and luxurious family home which is being offered for rent for the first time.

The Main House
You enter the main house through the vaulted stone kitchen with ceiling and walls in exposed stone, and eye-catching large fireplace. The large dining room, also vaulted, leads off to one side and has an elipse shaped marble dining table that seats 12, and antique wooden sideboards. A colourful antique American quilt (from the owner’s collection) adorns the end wall. The room opens out onto a west facing terrace and the mountains.

The kitchen, which used to be the bergerie for the sheep in the 16th century, is a fully equipped professional cook’s kitchen with a dish-washer, microwave, and an excellent collection of high quality cooking pots, dishes, bowls, utensils, a magi-mix, juicer etc. There is also a separate well stocked food pantry with the fridge, spices, other food stuffs, etc.

Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms; one with a super king bed, and the other with a double, both with splendid views and full bathrooms.

There are 2 salons; The larger has an oversized hand-made sofa, an art pottery collection, an antique Indian coffee table, and a 62 inch high definition screen with 3 types of DVD players- including European, American and Blue Ray. The owners have a significant film collection which guests are welcome to borrow. The second salon, with exposed stone walls and bookshelves, has an antique iron divan which can be used as a single bed.

Outside this house but still attached is another bedroom with a separate entrance which has a double bed and full bathroom. It has a west facing terrace. This has often been used for visiting grandmothers and nannies.

Summer Kitchen and Various Terraces
The summer kitchen (outdoors), facing the sunset, has the original old forge fireplace and supporting stone walls on 2 sides. It is open on the other sides. There is a made-to-measure architectural stone table and benches which seats 12, a Godin range, another hob, shelving, fridge, and an ancient stone sink found on the grounds of the property. It is well supplied with dishes, glasses, utensils, and bowls etc.

Adjoining the summer kitchen and completely open air is a pink terrace with an oval granite table on an antique curved iron base. This can comfortably seat 8 or more guests.

Between the 2 houses is a terrace with a barbeque area with both a gas and a charcoal Weber grill. There are also special large paella pans and burners.

The Farm House
In the old farmhouse there is a Moroccan style guest room with a queen bed, double sofa-bed, a separate wet shower room and a toilet closet. The handsome striped curtains were hand-woven in Fez. This room opens up at the back to an east facing terrace (cool in the afternoons) with tables and lounge chairs, a fountain and pond and plants.

The arched door next to this room leads to a stone walled media room with comfortable seating. It holds most of the DVD and music collection, and has a TV on the wall. There is also an excellent new sofa bed which permits this room to transform into another bedroom.

Next to this salon is a good- sized central hallway with a large guest bathroom with rain shower. This can be used as a private bathroom for media room guests.

Adjoining the large central hallway is the extraordinary room: the Orangerie. It is an all-purpose space for entertaining, eating, or lounging. There is a kitchen area along one wall with a stove and a fridge etc. There is comfortable and elegant seating including a large hand-made sofa, and a stunning Louis 14th armoire containing all dishes, glasses etc. The antique Indian dining table can seat 8. The room is decorated with the owners’ art collection. There are windows on every side overlooking the lawns, fountain, and vineyards.

Next to the Orangerie is the pool bathroom/changing room with a toilet and rain shower.

Pool Area
There is a gated and walled secure pool area with a collection of high-end cushioned lounge chairs and umbrellas. The pool, with its own fountain, is large and excellent for lap swimming. There is a diving end and a shallow end.

In the shaded pool kitchen and eating area (seating for 12), there is a small fridge, an old brick work surface, and various shelves filled with serving bowls, wooden and plastic plates, and a variety of unbreakable glasses and cups.

There is also a shaded area with 3 hammocks next to the pool. West of the pool there is a zinnia, sunflower and cosmos cutting garden.

Cabin in the Woods
The charming cabin in the woods has a queen bed, good shelving, and features windows overlooking the countryside. There is a hand-made mosaic tiled bathroom with a separate toilet and sink area. It is air conditioned.

Outside the cabin, on the south side, is a shaded eating area with a stone table, made from the old tiles found on the property and the ancient wheat grinding stones, a sink, and work surface. On the other side-facing north -there is a large circular wooden deck with lounge chairs which is surrounded by green oaks, and a collection of succulents, box, ferns.

Other Areas and Equipment
There is a full laundry room with 2 washing machines and a tumble dryer, and another large fridge. There is a toilet closet in this room. There are also 3 clothes drying lines behind the old barn next to the green house.

Area description

Villa Sauve is 3 kms from the early medieval village of Sauve, mid-way between the National Park of the Cevennes Mountains and the Mediterranean.

A vast array of beautiful towns, in many cases dating back to the Romans and before, lie within an hour’s drive. The closest beaches are 45 mins away, between Carnon and La Grande Motte, and the beaches of Les-Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue wildlife park are 75 mins away. The foothills of the Cevennes Mountains are just 20 mins away by car.

Quissac (8 kms) caters for all basic needs, has excellent butchers and bakers, a fresh produce street market on a Wednesday, and a small supermarket. Sauve (3 kms) has a good baker, an excellent delicatessen, basic supplies and a fresh produce street market on Saturday. There are post offices with ATMs in Sauve and Quissac, and several banks in Quissac.

There are half a dozen good restaurants within 10 mins drive, including one gourmet restaurant, and several takeaway pizza restaurants. Depending on requirements, it may be possible to arrange catered meals at the house.

Things to do
Villa Sauve is ideally situated for all kinds of outdoor activity, sightseeing, cultural activities and eating out. We sometimes find that guests settle in so comfortably - reading by the large, enclosed swimming pool, taking walks, lounging in a hammock, drinking the excellent local wines as the sun sets - that they hardly leave the hill. There are swings, four bicycles and helmets, petanque (French bowls), and a selection of good exercise equipment.

Yet there are so many other things to see and do close by - sightseeing, river and beach swimming, mountain activities, visits to caves, canoeing, horse riding.

Quissac (10 min away) has public tennis courts and the shopping is a delight in the lively, well stocked street markets, which sell delicious locally grown products - olives, goat and sheep cheese, wines, honey, every kind of Mediterranean fruits and vegetables, cooked dishes, patisseries, fresh fish from the Mediterranean, home cured hams, pates, saucissons. Each day of there week there is a market in one of the local towns, and visiting them is a great way to start the day.

There is a wide choice of sandy beaches within 45 minutes driving (Carnon) and 1 hour 15 minutes (Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer). At some there are beach restaurants with beach lounge rental available.

The nearest golf courses are half an hour away, in the region of Montpellier. Also nearby are excellent vineyards (Pic St Loup, Faugeres, etc), river swimming (20 minutes), beautiful walks to suit every level, and enchanting ancient villages. The Pic Saint Loup, one of the hottest new wine regions of France, is just 20 minutes away. We know many of the vignerons personally and can recommend which to visit.

Montpellier and Nîmes offer a cosmopolitan cultural life, with classical and rock concerts (especially the Roman arena at Nîmes) and opera, museums and art galleries. However, the villages and towns nearby also offer a great variety of concerts, festivals and exhibitions in the summer months, particularly Sauve.
